Across Tooro Kingdom and far beyond it, flags have been lowered, drums have fallen silent, and clans have gathered to grieve the passing of Rukirabasaija Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the King of Tooro, who died on the evening of Thursday, 27 August 2026, at the age of 34 following a critical illness.
For most Ugandans alive today, King Oyo was the only Omukama of Tooro they had ever known. He came to the throne on 12 September 1995, a toddler of three years, after the sudden death of his father, Omukama Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III, in August of that year. The image of a small boy seated on a throne far larger than himself travelled the world, and the Guinness World Records recognised him as the youngest reigning monarch on earth. He assumed the full duties of kingship at eighteen, in April 2010, and went on to reign for three decades.

Parliament to hold a special sitting

The Parliament of Uganda is today scheduled to hold a special sitting in the late King's honour. According to the Order Paper for the sitting, convened for the afternoon of 3 September 2026, a Motion for a Resolution of Parliament paying tribute to King Oyo is to be moved by the Prime Minister and Leader of Government Business, and seconded by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Joel Ssenyonyi, alongside Members of Parliament from the Tooro sub-region, among them Mr Lawrence Akugizibwe, Ms Linda Irene and Ms Spellanza Muhenda Boguma. About seventy minutes have been set aside for debate.

The House had already paused to remember the monarch earlier in the week. On Tuesday, 1 September, the Speaker of Parliament, Mr Jacob Marksons Oboth, described the King's death as deeply painful and asked Members to stand with the people of Tooro in their grief. He told the House that when a king departs, it is not a family alone that mourns but a kingdom, a people and a nation. Members observed a moment of silence, and the Speaker signalled that a formal tribute motion would follow. Among the qualities repeatedly recalled in those remarks was the late King's interest in young people — his support for opportunities for the youth, and his use of international platforms to introduce Tooro and Uganda to the wider world.

Preparations for the return of the remains

Government and kingdom officials have been working jointly on the funeral programme. The Office of the President has confirmed that His Excellency the President will formally receive the body at Entebbe International Airport and pay his respects, after which the remains are to be flown onward to Kyegegwa District. From there, a slow road procession will carry the casket towards Fort Portal, allowing subjects along the route to bid farewell, before it reaches the Karuziika Palace, where a nine-day period of mourning is to be observed ahead of burial at the royal tombs. The Uganda People's Defence Forces are expected to render a gun salute as part of the official honours, and the President has directed that the late King be accorded an official burial with flags flown at half-mast.

Timings have shifted more than once as arrangements are finalised. Earlier announcements pointed to the remains arriving in the country on Thursday; the most recent reports indicate the return has moved to Friday. Readers are advised to follow official communications from the Tooro Kingdom and the Government of Uganda for confirmed times.

Clans gather, and questions of succession

At the heart of the traditional rites stands the Babiito royal clan, whose head, the Musuuga, oversees key cultural arrangements. The Kingdom's Prime Minister, Mr Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, has assured subjects that the continuity of the Crown is secure and that the late King leaves an heir whose identity will be announced in accordance with Tooro custom. Consultations among elders and clan leaders are continuing, and some questions surrounding the succession are still being worked through by the Kingdom's own institutions. A condolence book has been opened at the Buziga Palace in Kampala, where mourners have been signing since last week.

A quiet lesson for our learners

For our pupils, this moment is more than a news headline. It is a living illustration of what they read about in Social Studies: that Uganda is a republic with an elected government, yet one in which traditional institutions such as Tooro, Buganda, Bunyoro and Busoga continue to carry deep cultural meaning; and that a cultural leader's authority rests not on political power but on the respect and identity of a people.

The Administration, staff and pupils of Bright Sparks Junior School join the rest of the country in extending heartfelt condolences to the Queen Mother, the royal family, the Babiito clan and all the people of Tooro.

We shall reach the shore.

Editor's note: This report is based on statements from the Parliament of Uganda, the Office of the President and Tooro Kingdom officials as reported in the national press up to 3 September 2026. Funeral arrangements remain subject to change.

President Yoweri Museveni officiated the unveiling and ceremonial naming of Uganda’s crude oil. The landmark event, hosted at the Kingfisher Development Area, brings the country a step closer to commercial petroleum extraction.

The project naming convention bridges Uganda's natural ecosystem with its national heritage. The flagship Tilenga project operated by TotalEnergies across the Buliisa and Nwoya districts—blends the Acholi word "Til" and the Runyoro/Rutooro word "Engabi", both referencing the native Uganda Kob and Bushbuck antelopes. Meanwhile, the Kingfisher field in Kikuube District, managed by CNOOC Uganda Limited, draws its title from the agile, fish-eating bird native to the Lake Albert basin.

Uganda’s petroleum reserves, estimated at 6.5 billion barrels in place with up to 1.7 billion recoverable barrels, present unique technical properties. Classified as medium-sweet crude due to its low sulfur content, the oil is exceptionally waxy, solidifying at room temperatures. To transport it from the Albertine Graben to the Tanzanian port of Tanga, developers are constructing the 1,443-kilometer East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP), set to become the world’s longest electrically heat-traced pipeline.

The government and joint-venture partners maintain that overall infrastructure including the Central Processing Facilities (CPFs) and well pads remains on track to achieve first commercial oil. Once fully operational, the joint developments at Tilenga and Kingfisher are projected to reach a peak extraction capacity of approximately 230,000 barrels per day.
